Meatless Monday and possibly meatless everyday......

I have decided to make a concerted effort to go vegetarian.  Considering today is Meatless Monday I think this is the best way to start.  For those of you that know me I’m sure you’ll think to yourselves “Really Kate?  I seriously don’t see this happening” and I can understand why.  I am, and have always been, a huge fan of meaty things like sausages and roast chickens and yummy rare steaks but I just can’t abide the thought of those sweet, trusting animals being abused and then killed in a painful way just so that I can fill my tummy.  My tummy is happily filled with chickpeas and rice right now and I’m a happy woman.
I’ve been thinking of this for quite a while but what is tipping me over the edge is an article I read in the paper this morning about an adventure tour company that killed 100 of its sled dogs because business was slumping.  Read it yourself here if you want.  I know that in Canada we don’t eat dogs and a mass cull is viewed to be different than slaughter for food but to be honest,  an animal is an animal.  They all feel pain and terror at the moment someone comes at them with a rifle as they are chained to a barrel.  Or a nail gun to the head on the slaughterhouse floor.  Poor babies.  I’ll be hugging my dog extra tight tonight and eating a nice bowl of cauliflower and potato Aloo Gobi.  Don’t misunderstand me, I’ll be relishing my memories of chicken curry  and blue rare steaks but that’s what it has to be from now on, a memory.

The only animal torture I'll be involved in in the future is forcing my dog to wear this outfit (he was really pissed off and wouldn't move until I took it off).
